2024: Prostate cancer is in remission; Watchman device helps with heart issues; major health issue revolves around stability and bialance.
1/20/2020: Returning from a February and March 2019 respite in Naples, Fl my kidneys shut down due to prostate problems. TURP surgery on May 8, 2019 led to the fact that I had aggressive Prostate cancer. My wife has been a trooper in providing care, patience, and advice. Got a second opinion on what to do after I learned it has spread to the liver (bad thing--It has been diagnosed as stage 4). Recently I've had a couple of androgen type injections to stop the production of testosterone. I start chemo on January 21, 2020. My usual pessimistic self is a bit optimistic due to the quality of the medical providers.
Fall 2018: I was pleasantly surprised by Elmhurst College awarding me a "Distinguished Service to Alma Mater: awarded to alumna or alumnus who demonstrates, excellence through service to campus life, to students, and to the College as a whole." (See: https://www.elmhurst.edu/alumni/institutional-awards/ for information and picture)
I have changed my amateur radio call sign from KA9MXW--the "MXW" said one friend was for many extra words because I was I lawyer--to KA9LAW to reflect my profession.
8/12/2017: 50th Anniversary of marriage to Bonnie a/k/a patient spouse. Working through some genealogy notes of her mom, using internet resources, along with the help of the local Schuyler Colfax DAR chapter, I was able to qualify her for the DAR based on her heritage to the patriot Joshua Logan Younger who is buried in Bedford, IN. Her fifth great-grandfather Charles Younger (look him up, he is an interesting guy) is the grandfather of the notorious Missouri outlaw Cole Younger who ran with Jesse James.
Early 2017: I learned that I have "Lynch Syndrome" which I passed on to my older son Matt who was diagnosed with rectal cancer in December of 2016. At age 41 he went through chemo, radiation, surgery and more chemo. All is well and he is reconnected and as Paul Levy told me "go colon go". Fortunately I have no symptoms. Though my review of Missouri records I learned that my mom's father died of rectal cancer and her mom died of colon cancer. I also learned that my maternal grandfather and maternal step-grandfather were brewers at Anheuser Busch--hence my affinity for beer and specifically Budweiser products.
8/2016:Clumsiness strikes again--I twisted my weak right ankle and broke a bone in the 5th metatarsal, a so-called "Jones Fracture". That caused me to keep weight off the foot for a couple of months and after surgery, implantation of a screw, and a couple of casts I am again mobile
2/11/2016: 2 1/ year anniversary of fractured injury to right wrist and elbow along with a torn right rotator cuff due to falling down my son's basement stairs 11 days after I retired. Therapy and daily exercise has helped recovery and avoid rotator cuff surgery (1 tendon is 70% ripped).
February and March 2016: Vacationed in Naples, FL
October 2015: 50th College Class Reunion at Elmhurst College (See: 1965.elmhurst.edu for the WebPage I created (check out the bus I drove, the pet skunk another scholar had in the dorm as a pet, and my thoughts on participating in the Selma march in 1965).
Summer 2015: Took sons, wives, and grandkids to Disney for a week. Fun but it was hot as might be expected.
February 2015: Vacationed in Naples, FL.
July 2014: Vacationed in Bonita Springs, FL (July was a replacement for March due to injury), looked at real estate and decided to use what was saved to instead enjoy grandchildren and other things (see below).
Also returned from trip to La Crosse, WI to buy a 2013 bright red Chrysler 200 hardtop convertible to replace my 2001 bright red Chrysler Sebring with 51,000 miles which I promptly sold to a dealer in Niles. I wanted to get a 2003 50th anniversary Corvette, but had to compromise a bit with my patient spouse.
I wish the best for all class members as they continue with their lives and family activities.
12/31/2013: Retired! Planned to be in FL in March of 2014 after retirement; broke right wrist and elbow on 1/11/2014 while helping son move residence; months of wrist rehabilitation ahead. Some retirement! Now all I have to do is to get Medicare (what a nightmare to get them to have accurate records) to pay the bills. Medicare even wanted me to sue my son. No way, I was the idiot who didn't hold on to the handrail going down to the basement while carrying a box of toys.
